Welcome to Early Career Day!

This event is for everyone in their early career, from graduate students to machinists. Early career generally means you are within the first 5 years of your position, though this is more of a guideline and by no means a cutoff for this event!

We are pleased to announce that there is no registration fee for this event - many thanks to GAPS, ECS ERG, and TRIUMF for their support!

Please register by 5pm, Friday 11th September to ensure you'll get lunch!

How to Apply for a Job in Science – Lessons from Reading About 1,000 Job Applications 1h

Applying for a job is a bit of a black box: What are employers actually looking for? How much time do they spend reading your application? And what makes someone stand out when dozens of highly qualified people are applying for the same job?

The truth is that nothing improves your application writing like reading lots (and lots) of applications, therefore this talk provides some insights into how potential selection committees see your applications, what makes them stand out positively and what are mistakes which are easy to avoid.

The goal is not to teach you how to write the “perfect” application, but to help you understand how applications are actually evaluated - and how to make it easier for a hiring committee to see why you might be the right person for the job.

What was one of the most standout interview experiences you've ever had? (a question you got asked, a response you received)
What are some examples of red flags to look out for when applying or interviewing for jobs?
What are some questions, attitudes, or mannerisms that you've seen when interviewing someone that should be avoided?
What advice would you give yourself when you were early in your career?
If you could go back and make a different decision in your early career, would you? And what would it be?
